Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
FOX CITIES STADIUM -- Wisconsin Timber Rattler outfielder Mike Wilson went 4-for-4 with a two run homer in the first inning and a game winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Timber Rattlers to an 8-7 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks. Marshall Hubbard also homered for the Rattlers in front of the biggest crowd of the season at Fox Cities Stadium.
Both teams got on the board in the first inning. Rattler starter Julio Santiago walked leadoff batter Emilio Bonafacio and balked him to second. Alberto Gonzalez sent a ground ball to third that Yung Chi Chen bobbled for one error and threw wildly to first for a second error. When the play ended, Bonafacio had scored and Gonzalez was standing on third. Wilkin Castillo singled in Gonzalez for a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Jereme Milons drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Mark Reynolds had an RBI single for a 4-0 Silver Hawk advantage.
The Rattlers struck back with a two out rally in the bottom of the first. Chen singled with two outs and none on base. Wilson drilled the first pitch of his at bat over the left field wall and the Rattlers were down 4-2.
South Bend (63-46 overall, 22-17 second half) scored another unearned run in the top of the third. Agustin Murillo doubled with one out. He scored all the way from second after a wild throw by Matt Tuiasosopo to first on a grounder to short off the bat of Reynolds with two outs.
The Rattlers (61-48, 22-17) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wilson singled with one out. Hubbard lined a homer to center, just to the right of the batter's eye to move Wisconsin to within 5-4. Jeff Clement, the Mariners first pick of the 2005 draft, singled with two outs. Oswaldo Navarro doubled to leftcenter and Clement raced home with the tying run.
But, South Bend got a two-out, two-run single by Travis Gulick in the top of the fifth inning to put the Hawks up 7-5.
A sacrifice fly by Jack Arroyo in the bottom of the fifth inning got the Rattlers close. Josh Womack doubled with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brent Johnson followed by chopping an RBI single through the left side of the infield and Womack scored the run to tie the game 7-7.
The Wisconsin bullpen kept the Silver Hawks off the board to keep the game tied. Steve Grasley retired all four batters he faced. Justin Jordan allowed one hit and struck out a pair in three scoreless innings. Wisconsin relievers have not allowed a run in 27 consecutive innings.
The winning rally started when Brent Johnson drew a walk to start the ninth against Hippolito Guerrero. One out later, Guerrero walked Yung Chi Chen. Esmerling Vasquez relieved for the Hawks and face Wilson. Vasquez threw a wild pitch to move Johnson to third and Chen to second. Wilson worked the count to 3-2 before blooping in a single to center to drive in Johnson with the game winning run and 5,817 fans went home happy.
Game two of the series is Wednesday night. Ivan Blanco (3-2, 6.17ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Ross Ohlendorf (7-8, 4.93ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Silver Hawks. Game time is 7:05pm.
