Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING- Gary Perez's two-run homer in the ninth inning off Joey McLaughlin tied the score and a passed ball on David Corrente in the 10th inning allowed Damaso Espino to score the game-winning run as the Burlington Bees(56-53,22-17) sent slumping Lansing (54-54, 17-22) to its third straight loss and seventh defeat in ten games with a 5-4, 10-inning win on Tuesday night at Oldsmobile Park. The loss sends the Lugnuts to the .500 mark on their overall seasonal record for the first time in 2005.
Lansing got off to a good start early, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning off Gabe DeHoyos. A pair of walks and a fielders choice set up a two-run double by Anthony Sanders that scored Christian Snavely and David Hicks.
In the fourth, the Bees would slice the lead to 2-1 when Eddie Solis' RBI single scored Brian McFall. However, the Lugnuts would reestablish their lead in the bottom half of the frame, scoring a pair of runs off Yovany Damico on RBI hits by Corrente and Eugenio Velez.
Still, Damico pitched well in relief of the Bees starter DeHoyos, who only lasted an inning. In five frames, Damico allowed five hits and the two runs. Zane Carlson followed suit behind Damico, retiring all nine hitters he faced in his three innings. Damico, Carlson and Chad Blackwell combined to set down 14 straight Lugnut hitters from the fifth inning until Snavely broke the streak with a one-out walk in the 10th.
After the Bees added a single run in the fifth off Lugnuts starter Po-Hsuan Keng(ND) on a single by Espino, the visitors were handcuffed until the ninth. Keng worked five innings, allowing eight hits and two runs in getting the no-decision. Jordan Timm worked three shutout frames of relief, striking out five to take the 4-2 lead into the ninth.
McLaughlin was greeted with a leadoff single to center by Solis and then allowed the homer to Perez, scoring the Bees shortstop and pinch-runner Geraldo Valentin. The Lugnuts closer managed to not allow any more damage, however.
In the tenth, Espino led off with a single and after a pair of strikeouts, Kenard Springer gretted Yesson Berroa(0-1) with a double to shoot Espino to third. Then with Valentin at the plate, a passed ball by Corrente allowed Espino to score and give the Bees the lead.
Blackwell allowed the one-out walk to Snavely in the 10th, but then got Eric Nielsen to bounce into a game-ending double play. The save was Blackwell's 11th of the season. Carlson(1-0) got the win in relief for the Bees.
Lansing continues its series with the Bees tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m. as Russ Savickas hopes to snap the Lugnuts out of their funk. The right hander will be opposed by Burlington lefty Danny Christensen.
