Burlington Bees News Release

Lansing, MI (August 2, 2005) - In his first game in the Midwest League, SS Gary Perez belted a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game and the Burlington Bees (22-17, 56-53) went on to beat the Lansing Lugnuts (17-22, 54-54) 5-4 in ten innings at Oldsmobile Park tonight. Tonight was the Bees' first extra-inning game since the All-Star Break. The Bees now lead the season series 4-1 over the Lugnuts.

Things started bad for the Bees. Spot starter Gabe DeHoyos allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in the bottom of the first inning and then came out of the game. Yovany Damico took over the second inning and pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by David Corrente and an RBI single by Eugenio Velez.

The Bees broke through against Lugnuts' starter Po-Hsuan Keng in the top of the fourth. Brian McFall led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a single by Eddie Solis. In the top of the fifth, Irving Falu led off with an infield single, went to second on an errant pickoff throw, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a single by Damaso Espino. Falu finished with a season-high four hits.

Jordan Timm took over for Keng in the top of the fifth and pitched three shutout innings while striking out five. Zane Carlson took over for the Bees in the seventh inning and retired all six batters he faced to get the game to the ninth.

The Lugnuts turned to closer Joey McLaughlin for the top of the ninth inning and Solis greeted him with a single up the middle. Geraldo Valentin entered as a pinch-runner for Solis at first, but it didn't matter who was running with Perez coming up next. McLaughlin fell behind and fired a 3-1 fastball down the middle that Perez smashed over the wall in left to tie the game. Perez had hit two home runs in 36 games with Idaho Falls before joining the Bees yesterday and making his debut today. McLaughlin was charged with a blown save, but was able to get out of the inning with the game still tied. Carlson pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra-innings.

In the top of the tenth, Yesson Berroa came on to pitch for the Lugnuts and Espino led off with a single to left. After a pair of strikeouts, Kenard Springer lined a double into left-center field to advance Espino to third and bring Valentin to the plate. On a 2-1 pitch, Berroa delivered low and the ball skipped through the glove of Corrente behind the plate and rolled to the backstop allowing Espino to score the go-ahead run. Corrent was charged with a passed ball, but the run ended up being earned as Berroa walked the next two men to load the bases before getting out of the inning. The Bees turned to Chad Blackwell for the bottom of the tenth. Blackwell struck out the first batter and after a walk, got Eric Nielsen to ground into a game-ending double play and earn his eleventh save. Carlson (1-0) picked up the win and Berroa (0-1) suffered the loss.

The Bees and Lugnuts continue this series tomorrow night at 6:05 Central time at Oldsmobile Park. LH Danny Christensen (2-5, 3.63) will start for the Bees against RH Russ Savickas (5-4, 5.30) for the Lugnuts. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:45.
