Rays make the most of two hits in 2-1 win

Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- Chris Nowak's two-run, first inning home run was all the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays needed in a 2-1 squeeker over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of 3,806 Penny Hot Dog fans on Tuesday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.
Nowak's fifth home run of the year scored Reid Brignac who walked before him to account for both Rays runs. Fernando Perez singled to leadoff the game but was caught stealing for the 15th time this year prior to Brignac's free pass.
The rest of the story was pitching. Eddie De La Cruz won his fifth game of the year with five innings, three hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Richard De Los Santos continued his dominance of the Midwest League with three innings, two hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Both pitchers kept Cedar Rapids at bay until Jose De La Cruz earned his 15th save of the year but not before making it interesting after a one out double scored and the tying run was at first base.
The Devil Rays took advantage of a nice night and the fans took advantage of Penny Hot Dogs to draw the fifth largest crowd of the season. The Rays continue their run for a playoff berth with another game against the Kernels on Wednesday, August 3.
The Rays will send Jarrad Lavergne to the mound against Cedar Rapids Francisco Cordova. The game start time is 7:05 p.m.
