Indianapolis Indians News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Indianapolis Indians held on to defeat the Gwinnett Braves, 7-5, to win their third straight game on this road trip and eight of their last nine contests overall on Monday at Coolray Field.
Austin Meadows, who hails from the local area, finished 0-for-5 to end his 26-game hitting streak.
The Tribe gave starter Chad Kuhl an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning. Alen Hanson singled and scored on an RBI groundout by Adam Frazier.
Indianapolis (39-31) added on in the fourth. Josh Bell belted his 11th home run of the year as he continued his torrid June. He entered tonight's matchup hitting .472 in his last 10 games. Kuhl later stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and worked a walk to help his own cause.
The Indians went up 4-0 in the sixth on an RBI double by Pedro Florimon.
Gwinnett (31-40) finally answered in the home half of the sixth as Kuhl found himself in a jam. They scored a pair on RBI knocks by Ronnier Mustelier and Sean Kazmar.
Kuhl (6-2) departed in the sixth as the eventual winner having worked 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on 10 hits. Casey Kelly (2-3) took the loss after working just four innings, surrendering two runs.
The Indians would go on to score in the seventh and eighth innings and extend their lead.
Hanson tripled to open the seventh and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Meadows. He later scampered home on a wild pitch that catcher Anthony Recker couldn't locate near the plate.
After the G-Braves plated a run in the bottom of the seventh, Hanson collected an RBI when he beat out an infield dribbler for a hit to make the tally 7-3.
Gwinnett managed two more runs in the bottom of the ninth, but came up short.
Kelvin Marte allowed three runs in 2.2 innings. Dovydas Neverauskas earned his second career Triple-A save after recording the final two outs.
Game two of the four-game series will begin Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
