Wings Take Series Behind Big 6th Inning

Rochester Red Wings News Release

TOLEDO, OH - What started as a pitcher's duel Sunday night at Fifth Third Field turned into anything but. Rochester scored seven runs in the sixth inning as the Red Wings held on to beat the Toledo Mud Hens 8-5.

Nick Greenwood (1-0) and Thad Weber (5-6) traded zeros through four innings before the Mud Hens (30-39) struck first with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Greenwood was making his first start with the Wings, a spot start because Tommy Milone had his contract selected by Minnesota on Saturday.

With a 1-0 deficit, the sixth inning for the Red Wings (42-28) began harmlessly with a ground ball to shortstop off the bat of Adam Brett Walker. However, an error allowed Walker to reach to begin the frame. That set the stage for a John Ryan Murphy whose at-bat turned out to be a crucial one in the ballgame.

Murphy fell behind 0-2 before a ball in the dirt moved the count to 1-2. Two close pitches that Weber and the Toledo dugout believed to be strikes were called balls by home plate umpire Eric Gillam before Murphy doubled to right-center moving Walker to third. James Beresford and Logan Schafer followed with RBI singles and Rochester took its first lead at 2-1.

Mud Hens manager Lloyd McClendon trotted to the mound to take Weber out and Weber had some words with the plate umpire and was ejected. McClendon was then ejected after getting into it with Gillam, to the point that McClendon kicked dirt to completely cover the plate. There was a slight delay after the pitching change as the plate remained covered.

Jorge Polanco drove in another run with a single, Kennys Vargas walked to load the bases, Eddie Rosario added a sacrifice fly prompting a pitching change and it was 4-1. Tommy Field greeted the new reliever with a two-run double and Wilfredo Tovar followed with an RBI double of his own and it was suddenly 7-1 Rochester.

Greenwood was lifted prior to the bottom of the sixth. Given what appeared to be a 60-pitch limit, the Red Wings couldn't have asked for much better. He scattered four hits and one walk while striking out two. Toledo would not go quietly, however, as the Hens plated three runs in the bottom half off Dan Runzler and Rochester's lead was down to 7-4. Toledo scored another run off Alex Wimmers in the bottom of the eighth to make it 7-5.

Polanco gave the Wings some insurance in the ninth with a sacrifice fly. Wimmers would close out the game to earn his sixth save but not before the Mud Hens brought the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth as Wimmers struck out Tyler Collins to end it.

Schafer and Field each finished with three hits while Field and Polanco added two RBI apiece. Beresford was the lone Wing with two runs scored.
