Norfolk Tides News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs plated an unearned run in the top of the 10th inning to edge the Tides 5-4 Monday night at Harbor Park.
With the score knotted at 4-4, J.P. Crawford led off the 10th frame with a single to center field off of Zach Phillips (5-3). Norfolk centerfielder L.J. Hoes mishandled the ball on the play, allowing Crawford to scamper to second base with nobody out. Two outs later Andrew Knapp lined a single to center off of Pedro Beato, giving the IronPigs the 5-4 advantage.
Edward Mujica then worked around an error in the bottom of the 10th inning to earn his league-leading 16th save of the year.
The Tides had tied the contest in the eighth inning on a two-out RBI triple from Ozzie Martinez. Martinez, who hit a grand slam as part of a three-hit game on Sunday, finished with two hits and a run scored to help pace Norfolk's eight-hit attack.
Making his first appearance with the Tides since being optioned from Baltimore on June 18, Norfolk starter T.J. McFarland allowed four runs on eight hits over five-plus innings of work. He walked one and struck out one, but yielded two solo home runs in the second inning before allowing two runs without recording an out in the sixth frame. He threw 44 of his 72 pitches for strikes and now owns a 3.00 ERA through five games with the Tides this season.
Hoes had a two-run single and two walks in the contest, while Michael Almanzar added two singles, an RBI and a run scored.
The loss snapped Norfolk's season-best three-game winning streak.
The two clubs continue their four-game set Tuesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 7:05. Andy Oliver (0-0, 2.08) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Jake Thompson (5-5, 3.18).
Tuesday is Turn Back The Clock Night at Harbor Park, as hot dogs, sodas and popcorn will be available for just 50 cents each, courtesy of Smithfield Foods. The Tides will also be wearing throwback jerseys of the Norfolk Tars, who were six-time champions of the Piedmont League from 1934 - 1953.
Notes: T.J. McFarland had allowed just one home run in 364 career batters faced with Norfolk before surrendering two home runs in the second inning Monday...Chaz Roe registered his 11th consecutive scoreless appearance with 1.1 shutout innings of relief...Richard Rodriguez struck out three over two shutout innings of relief, lowering his ERA to 2.63...Dariel Alvarez singled in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games.
