Top of the Order Strong in 9-4 Win

Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

LANSING, Mich. - The top of the TinCaps' lineup wreaked havoc on the Lansing Lugnuts in a 9-4 win Monday at Cooley Stadium. OF Everett Williams led the way with a double and a monster two-run homer, driving in four runs.

The top four hitters in the batting order (Jeudy Valdez, Williams, Edinson Rincon and Griffin Benedict) combined to score five runs and drive in eight.

It was an odd game from the start. In the bottom of the 1st, the Lugnuts scored a run without a base hit when Chris Hopkins drew a walk, stole second and third, scoring on a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the 2nd, the TinCaps had a rally started with runners at first and second and one out, a ground ball off the bat of Rymer Liriano hit the runner between second and third. The umpires ruled the ball was intentionally kicked, resulting in an inning-ending double play.

The TinCaps took the lead in the top of the 3rd when Valdez put runners at second and third with a one-out double and Williams followed with a double down the right-field line to make it 2-1.

Up 3-2 in the 5th inning, the TinCaps struck again when Williams pounded the first pitch of the at-bat over the 20-foot-high wall, 395 feet away from home plate. Williams' first home run of the season, a two-run shot, made it 5-2.

Lansing tightened the game up in the bottom of the 5th by scoring twice to make it 5-4, but the TinCaps blew it open in the top of the 7th with a four-run rally. After the Lugnuts intentionally walked Williams to load the bases, Edinson Rincon stroked a two-run single to right-center, then Benedict drilled a two-run double to right-center to push the lead to 9-4.

The Fort Wayne bullpen was spot-on again as RHP Robert Poutier and LHPs Pedro Hernandez and Jeff Ibarra combined on 4.1 scoreless innings. In the series, the bullpen allowed just one run in 14.1 innings.

Hernandez (1-1) notched the win, working three innings. Lansing RHP Ryan Tepera took the loss, allowing seven runs in six innings.

Fort Wayne took three of four games in the set, upping its record to 13-11. Lansing fell to 14-11.

The TinCaps take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A Tampa Bay Rays) in a three-game series beginning Tuesday at 7:35 p.m. ET. TinCaps RHP John Hussey (2-0) starts against Hot Rods LHP Kyle Lobstein (0-2).
