Great Lakes Loons News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - The Great Lakes Loons got four two-run extra base hits, including two two-run home runs, as they topped the league-leading Lake County Captains 8-5 Monday night. The Loons wrapped up a 3-1 series against the Captains and now trail them by just a half game in the Midwest League East.
Lake County broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run by Jeremie Tice in the bottom of the fourth.
But a half inning later, the Loons took the lead for good. Captains starter Clayton Cook retired the first two batters of the inning, then surrendered consecutive singles to Christian Lara and Angelo Songco. Blake Smith followed with a two-run double. One pitch later, Jerry Sands hit a long home run to center field.
In the sixth inning, Rafael Ynoa drove home two runs with a double down the first base line to give the Loons a 6-1 advantage. In the next inning, Johan Garcia homered to right to extend the Loons lead to 8-2.
The Loons now lead the Midwest League in home runs (28), homering 10 times during their four-game series in Lake County.
Will Savage (2-1) put together another solid start. He threw a career-high seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Luis Vasquez secured his fifth save with a scoreless ninth inning, with a fastball touching 99 miles per hour on multiple occasions.
The Loons begin a six-game homestand Tuesday night at Dow Diamond. It's a Dollar Family Feast Night, with $1 prices for hot dogs, ice cream sandwiches and 16 oz. sodas. It's also Bay City Central High School Spirit Night.
Right-hander Elisaul Pimentel (1-1, 2.70 ERA), who threw 5 1/3 no-hit innings in his last start at Bowling Green, is scheduled to start. West Michigan will start right-hander Trevor Feeney (2-2, 3.09). Tickets are available at Loons.com or by calling 989-837-BALL. Game time Tuesday is 7:05pm.
NOTES: Garcia's home run was his first hit in the United States and first since August 12, 2006 in the Dominican Summer League. Like tonight, it came against an Indians affiliate... Ynoa, who didn't have an extra base hit before this series, notched three doubles in the four-game set... Lake County starter Clayton Cook has surrendered two home runs this year, both to Jerry Sands... J.T. Wise and Gorman Erickson were both hit by pitches in the game. Entering the game, the Loons had been hit by just two pitches all season.
