South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks held the West Michigan Whitecaps to just four hits on Monday morning, but the Whitecaps turned those hits into three runs for the 3-0 shutout win.
Even with the loss, South Bend took three out of four games in the series and has won six of seven against the Whitecaps this season.
South Bend starter Dan Taylor (LP, 1-2) was the tough luck loser, going down in defeat against the team from his hometown. Taylor grew up in Jenison, Michigan and attended Whitecaps games in nearby Comstock Park as a kid, but was on his game in trying to earn his second win. Taylor allowed just one run in six innings, but suffered the loss because South Bend was shutout for the first time in 2010.
The lone run against Taylor scored in the bottom of the fifth when Alexis Espinoza singled and Luis Salas doubled to put runners at second and third. Taylor threw a wild pitch to bring Espinoza in for a 1-0 Whitecaps lead.
After Brian Budrow (ND) pitched two scoreless innings of relief, Rafael Quezada (ND) could not keep the Whitecaps down in the ninth. Quezada hit Jordan Lennerton in the foot and then walked Avisail Garcia to start the rally. Espinoza doubled for one run and Salas added a sacrifice fly to give the Whitecaps the 3-0 edge.
That was plenty of support for West Michigan pitching today. Ramon Lebron (WP, 3-1) started and allowed no runs in six innings, striking out six and walking one. Cory Hamilton (SV, 1) followed with three scoreless innings to earn his first save of the year. Lebron and Hamilton scattered seven hits, allowing just one double and six singles to the Hawks.
Bobby Borchering, named Midwest League Hitter of the Week during the game, extended his hitting streak to six games.
The Silver Hawks head out on the road for the next three games against the Lansing Lugnuts. Tuesday's game time from Cooley Law School Stadium (formerly Oldsmobile Park) is 7:05 PM with LHP Mike Belfiore (1-2, 3.53 ERA) starting for South Bend against Lansing's RHP Ryan Shopshire (2-1, 4.82 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
