Titans Squeeze Past Nailers in Shootout
March 1, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
Friday night in Wheeling, the Nailers welcomed Darth Vader, the Storm Troopers, as well as over 3,000 fans into WesBanco Arena, as they faced off against the Titans. Keven Veilleux knotted the score at two in the final two minutes of play for Wheeling, but Trenton netted the lone marker in an eight-round shootout, as the visitors took a 3-2 decision.
The Titans started off the scoring early, connecting just 81 seconds into the contest. Andrew Johnston centered the puck to Bryan Haczyk, who squeezed a shot through Scott Darling's legs. Blake Kessel also assisted the power play goal.
The score stayed 1-0 for nearly two full periods, before Wheeling tied the game. While playing with a 5-on-3 advantage, Kevin Veilleux shuffled the puck on net from the right side. Scott Wedgewood made the save, but Paul Crowder was in the slot to pot the rebound with 30 seconds left in the middle frame. Zack Torquato snatched the second assist, as the game headed to the third, tied at one.
Early in the third, the Titans regained the lead. Bryan Haczyk took a shot from the right circle that got turned away by Darling.
Unfortunately, the rebound went to Kory Nagy, who found the back of the net. Then, with 95 seconds left in regulation, Peter Lenes crashed the net, leaving the puck off for Veilleux, who flipped a shot into the top of the cage.
Veilleux's goal forced overtime, and ultimately a shootout. After going seven rounds without a goal, Connor Goggin made a terrific move in round eight for the Titans. Paul Crowder was unable to answer, as the Titans came away with the 3-2 win.
Both goaltenders had busy games, as Scott Wedgewood got the win for Trenton, stopping 35 of 37 shots during the game, before an eight-save effort in the shootout. Scott Darling made 34 saves on 36 shots for Wheeling during the game, before a seven-for-eight performance in the shootout.
The Nailers and Titans will clash again on Saturday at 7:00 at WesBanco Arena.
