Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced a series of player moves, with all taking effect immediately. The Nailers have signed defenseman Todd Orlando, along with forwards Max MacKay and Ian DeLong, while receiving defenseman Reid McNeill from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and releasing forward Dave Shultz.
McNeill, 20, returns to the Nailers, after a one-game stint, making his American Hockey League debut with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The first-year blueliner has appeared in 29 games with Wheeling thus far, recording one goal, four assists, and five points. The goal came on the Nailers' most recent road trip, as Reid lit the lamp on February 14th in Greenville. Prior to turning pro, the London, ON native spent three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, tallying seven goals, 16 assists, and 23 points in 166 games with the London Knights and Barrie Colts.
Orlando, 26, checks in as the largest player on the 2012-13 Nailers roster, at 6'7", 232 lbs. Thus far this season, Todd has appeared in 16 games with the Central Hockey League's Denver Cutthroats, picking up one goal, while also accumulating 24 penalty minutes. The Clinton Township, MI native has one ECHL game on his resumé, after suiting up with the Cincinnati Cyclones on February 11, 2011. Prior to turning pro, Orlando spent two seasons with the WOJHL's Sarnia Blast, along with one season at Oakland University in the ACHA.
MacKay, 22, is in the midst of his first professional season, having dished out three assists in eight games with the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Two of those helpers came in Max's second career game, helping Bridgeport to a 4-0 victory against the Manchester Monarchs on November 17th. Prior to turning pro, the Salt Lake City, UT native spent one season with the AtJHL's Walpole Express, exploding for 25 goals and 62 points in 29 games.
DeLong, 24, will make his professional debut with the Nailers, following four years of college. The first two years of Ian's college career were spent at SUNY-Plattsburgh, before he took his talents to Curry College for the final two years. 2011-12 was the Lions, PA native's best in college, as he netted 13 goals and 31 points at Curry. Prior to that, the 5-foot-9 forward spent parts of three seasons in the OJHL, suiting up with the Oswego Admirals, Port Hope Predators, and Seguin Bruins.
Shultz, 26, appeared in 14 games with the Nailers, prior to his release this week. In his final game with Wheeling, Dave dropped the mitts with Elmira's Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel, and finished with nine penalty minutes in the contest. Prior to turning pro, the Trucksville, PA native was also a member of the New England Jr. Huskies and SUNY-Morrisville.
