Stingrays Power Past Komets in Shootout
March 1, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - Forward Tyler Johnson scored the game-winning shootout goal to give the South Carolina Stingrays (31-24-3-3) a 2-1 victory over the Fort Wayne Komets (28-28-1-2) at the North Charleston Coliseum Friday evening.
The Komets broke open the scoring 5:38 into the contest with a tally from defenseman Nick Shaus slipping a shot between the legs of Stingrays netminder Ryan Zapolski (W, 33 saves on 34 shots) from between the faceoff circles. Stingrays forward Andrew Cherniwchan tied the game at 17:36 deflecting a shot from defenseman Ryan McGinnis past Komets goaltender Jeff Deslauriers (SOL, 31 saves on 32 shots).
After scoreless second and third periods, the two sides moved into overtime locked 1-1. The Stingrays outshot the Komets in the extra session 5-4 including a shorthanded breakaway from defenseman Luka Vidmar, but a shootout would be needed. Johnson scored the only goal of the shootout in the third round and Zapolski stopped all five Komets shooters to seal the victory. Both teams finished the contest 0-for-4 on the power play.
