Elmira Jackals News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - The Elmira Jackals picked up a standings point for the sixth consecutive game by using a last-minute goal to force overtime and, eventually a shootout. The Jackals lost the breakaway competition 2-1 and the game 4-3 to move their record to 30-20-7 on the season.
The Jackals were on a mission in the first period and used some timely offense to take a two goal lead into the intermission. Working on a 2-on-1, Rob Bellamy collected a pass on the right wing and drove home his 13th goal of the season just 1:15 into the game. Kevin Harvey and Jordan Pietrus assisted. The same trio converted with less than a minute remaining in the first to give the Jackals a two-goal cushion. Bellamy shot a puck off of goalie Scott Stacjer's pad that bounced off of Harvey on the doorstep and in for his eighth of the season. Ian Keserich, who made his first start since February 2, stopped all 13 shots he faced to keep Elmira ahead.
In the second, Greenville used its forecheck to turn the tide. Jordie Johnston potted his 16th of the season with 2:42 gone by off of a wraparound pass by Brendan Connolly. Nearly five and a half minutes later Brandon Wong took a pass on the doorstep and lifted over Keserich's blocker to knot the score. Greenville' finished its surge when Zach Cohen banging in a rebound at 16:20. The Jackals were outshot 11-10 in the frame but were still within striking distance headed into the third.
Elmira's comeback effort was persistent throughout the final 20 minutes and the diligence paid off. After missing on a few chances early, the Jackals needed a few big saves from Keserich to keep the Road Warriors from extending the lead. With Keserich off for the extra attacker the Jackals got pucks to the net at every opportunity. With the clock ticking down its final minute, Bellamy wrenched a puck out of a pile through Stacjer's pads for the tying score.
The overtime session went by without much action as Greenville took the only shot, and Elmira failed to cash in on a power play. In the shootout Kyle Bushee scored on Elmira's fourth attempt for a 1-0 lead, but Greenville's Danny Hobbs tied the score in the bottom of the fifth. In the sudden death shootout none of Elmira's three shooters could net a marker. Tyler Fernandez picked up the winning goal in the top of the eighth round.
Keserich finished the night with 32 saves through regulation and overtime, and stopped six of eight in the shootout. The Jackals ended the night 0-for-6 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
