Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Titans were unable to get back into the win column in four games this week as their losing streak extended to eight. Despite the Titans' recent woes, they have been able to inch closer to a spot in the Kelly Cup Playoffs with their magic number now standing at 10.
The Titans returned to Sovereign Bank Arena for the first time in five games to take on the Greenville Grrrowl. Allan Sirois put Greenville up 3-0 at 8:57 of the second period before Brian McConnell and Scott Bertoli scored to cut the Grrrowl's lead to one heading into the intermission. John Snowden and Brock Radunske opened up the third period with goals 2:02 apart for another three-goal Grrrowl cushion. McConnell's second goal of the night started Trenton down the comeback trail again, but the Titans could only muster one more marker in falling 5-4.
Trenton traveled to Johnstown on Friday for their final road game against the Chiefs during the regular season. McConnell struck 1:17 into match for his third goal in two games and a 1-0 Titans' lead. The Chiefs answered back quickly when JB Bittner and Brandon Elliot got the puck past Rejean Beauchemin in a span of thirty-five seconds making it 2-1. That was all the scoring Johnstown goalie Morgan Cey needed stopping 27 of 28 shots to record the win.
The Toledo Storm were waiting at Sovereign Bank Arena for the Titans who bussed through the night for a noon-time start on Saturday. Trenton was never able to find its legs falling behind 2-0 before Jim Henkel's power play goal at 18:08 of the first. It looked as though the score would remain 2-1 heading into the third period, but Ryan Reid intercepted an outlet pass and broke in alone with 1:12 left to give Toledo a two-goal cushion after two. In final frame Matt Schmidt and Jason Maleyko put the puck into the net for the Storm to make the final 5-1.
In the rematch on Sunday, the Titans headed into the second period knotted 1-1 but two quick goals by Mike James and Chris Blight to start the stanza gave the Storm some breathing room. Aaron Gill got Trenton back within one with a tip-in power play goal, but Bracken Kearns put the game out of reach when he scored on the man-advantage at 5:30 of the third period. Gill's second of the afternoon coming with 58.2 seconds remaining in the contest completed the scoring as the Titans were defeated 4-3
The Titans make their last multi-game road trip of the season as they continue their string of four in a row against the Toledo Storm. Trenton heads to Toledo Sports Arena for games on Wednesday, March 15 and Friday, March 17. The Titans clash against Dayton Bombers for the final time this season on Saturday, March 18.
