Great Lakes Loons News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN - Great Lakes Loons pitchers walked 17 batters over the course of two seven-inning doubleheader games, losing twice Saturday night at Parkview Field in front of a crowd of 6,679. The TinCaps scored seven first-inning runs in Game 1 and held on for a 7-4 victory. The Loons rallied for five unanswered runs late in Game 2 but couldn't overcome a 6-0 early deficit and lost 6-5.
The twinbill got off to a rough start for the Loons as Fort Wayne sent 13 men to the plate in the first inning scoring seven times. Gustavo Gomez (4-5), scheduled to throw just one inning, only recorded two outs before Matt Laney entered in relief.
Fort Wayne did not score after its first-inning outburst. In the fourth inning, Scott Schebler and Jesse Bosnik recorded RBI hits to make the score 7-2. Then in the sixth, Schebler connected on a two-run home run to pull the Loons to within three.
Reigning Midwest League Pitcher of the Week Adys Portillo (4-2) worked five innings and surrendered two runs for the victory. Gomez was charged with five earned runs over 2/3 of an inning for the loss.
Schebler finished the first game 3-for-3.
Fort Wayne notched two runs to begin the second game, beginning the nightcap with four consecutive hits by Jace Peterson, Tyler Stubblefield, Donovan Tate and Lee Orr. The TinCaps batted around in the third inning, knocking starter Arismendy Ozoria (3-2) out of the game after facing four batters and failing to record an out.
Ozoria was charged with all six TinCaps runs (four earned) over two-plus innings for the loss.
Trailing 6-0, the Loons scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on sacrifice flies by O'Koyea Dickson and Jesse Bosnik. Then in the seventh inning, Angelo Songco blasted a three-run home run off Luis de la Cruz with nobody out to pull the Loons to within a run, 6-5. With one out, Schebler singled and Joe Winker walked off reliever Daniel Cropper. But with a 3-2 count, one out and the runners going, Jesse Bosnik struck out and catcher Matt Colantonio threw out Schebler at third to end the game.
The Loons (28-27) begin a three-game homestand Saturday evening at Dow Diamond against the West Michigan Whitecaps (25-30), the Midwest League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Saturday's game features a post-game Fireworks Loontacular, powered by Dow Corning. Tickets are available at Loons.com or 989-837-BALL. Lefty Jarret Martin (2-3, 3.36) is scheduled to start for Great Lakes opposite right-hander Wilsen Palacios (5-3, 4.03).
The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
