Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (31-25) used a late, error-infused rally to beat the Dayton Dragons 3-2 (21-35) on Saturday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. In the first game of the three-game series, Ryan Brett hit a solo home run, and Jeff Malm drove in a run for the Hot Rods. The win represents the third straight for Bowling Green and keeps them in a two-game lead for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Division.
Offensively, the Hot Rods did not wait long to take the game's first lead. After starter Jake Floethe hurled a 10-pitch first inning, Ryan Brett homered on the second pitch of the bottom of the first inning. The long fly ball landed in the Home Run Grill beyond the left field wall at Bowling Green Ballpark for Brett's fourth home run of the season.
Bowling Green added another run in the bottom of the third inning, using a two-out rally to back their starter Floethe. With two away, Drew Vettleson laced a line drive into the right field gap for a hustle double. Jeff Malm then rolled a single into right field, and Vettleson barely beat the tag at home to score the second run of the game for the Hot Rods.
However, Dayton scored the game's next two runs, and the score was tied heading into the bottom of the seventh. Joel Caminero began the inning by reaching on a two-base throwing error by Dayton third baseman Junior Arias. Later in the inning, with two outs and Caminero at third base, Juniel Querecuto grounded to first base for the apparent third out of the frame, but the throw sailed high to the covering pitcher Mike Dennhardt. Caminero scored to give the Hot Rods their lead they never relinquished.
Andrew Bellatti then pitched a perfect eighth inning, and Austin Hubbard locked the game down in the ninth for his sixth save. Bellatti's effort earned him his first win of the season. The Hot Rods are now in a position to win their eighth home series in nine tries in 2012 with a win on either Sunday or Monday as the series wraps up.
The Hot Rods will take on the Dragons in the middle game of their three-game set on Sunday at 2:05 PM at Bowling Green Ballpark. Bowling Green will give the start to LHP Felipe Rivero (5-3, 4.42), while the Dragons will counter with RHP Daniel Tuttle (0-0, 0.00).
