Dayton Dragons News Release
Bowling Green, Ky.-The Bowling Green Hot Rods took advantage of two errors to score the tie-breaking run in the seventh inning and hold on to defeat the Dayton Dragons 3-2 on Saturday night in the first game of a three-game set.
Bowling Green scored two early runs before the Dragons tied the game at 2-2 with single runs in the fifth and seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Bowling Green's Joel Caminero started the rally by reaching on a two-base throwing error against Dayton third baseman Junior Arias. Two batters later, Caminero scored from third on an error with two outs. Juniel Querecuto hit a one-bouncer to Dragons first baseman Sean Buckley. Buckley fielded the ball and his underhand flip to pitcher Mike Dennhardt would have easily gotten the hitter to end the inning, but the throw eluded Dennhardt as the run scored. Buckley was charged with the error as Bowling Green took a 3-2 lead.
The Dragons threatened in the ninth when Buckley doubled to the right field fence with two outs, but Hot Rods closer Austin Hubbard struck out Dayton's Kyle Waldrop to end the game.
Bowling Green took a quick lead in the first inning when lead-off man Ryan Brett hit the second pitch for a home run to left field, his fourth homer of the year. They added another run in the third on Jeff Malm's two-out run-scoring single to take a 2-0 lead.
The Dragons battled back in the fifth when Waldrop doubled over the head of the center fielder and eventually scored on Juan Silva's two-out bloop single to right to make it 2-1. The Dragons tied the game in the seventh. Steve Selsky launched a double to the fence in left-center and went to third on Buckley's single to center. Waldrop's sacrifice fly to right brought in Selsky and tied the game at 2-2.
Dragons starting pitcher Jacob Johnson worked the first six innings and pitched well, allowing eight hits and two runs with no walks and seven strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision. Dennhardt (1-2) relieved Johnson and allowed the unearned run in the seventh. He worked two innings without allowing a hit. He walked one and struck out two to suffer the loss.
The Dragons finished with seven hits. Buckley and Selsky each had two including doubles by both hitters. Joe Terry had a triple and Waldrop had a double.
The Dragons play at Bowling Green again on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. (WONE 980 AM) in the second game of a three-game series. Daniel Tuttle (1-2, 5.40) will be activated from the disabled list and start for Dayton against Bowling Green's Felipe Rivero (5-3, 1.89). The next home game is Wednesday, June 6 vs. the Lake County Captains.
