Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - A three-run homer by top Cubs prospect Javier Baez was one of many highlights for the Peoria Chiefs in a 15-3 drubbing of the Kane County Cougars on Saturday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Baez connected with his first professional home run in the top of the second as part of a five-run frame against starter Jason Mitchell (1-4). Mitchell only lasted three innings for the second straight start as he coughed up eight runs one eight hits. Peoria (25-31) picked up a pair in the first inning as Pin-Chieh Chen walked and scored on a groundout from Taiwan Easterling. A bases-loaded walk to Yasiel Balaguert put the Cougars (29-27) down by two.
In the second, RBI singles from Anthony Giansanti and Wes Darvill preceded the Baez blast which gave the Chiefs a 7-0 advantage. Giansanti singled home Chen again in the top of the third to make it an 8-0 contest. Peoria picked up another five-spot in the fifth against Jonathan Dooley, who worked three innings of relief.
Jose Rosario (4-5) was the beneficiary of all the run support. He tossed seven scoreless innings as he punched out 10 while limiting the Cougars to three hits. Kane County finally ticked the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth as Danny Mateo singled and scored on a Lane Adams groundout.
