SOUTH BEND, INDIANA - Gerson Montilla and Fidel Pena each hit two-run home runs during a seven-run fifth inning as the South Bend Silver Hawks (29-27) toppled the first place Lansing Lugnuts 11-1 in front of 3,493 fans at Coveleski Stadium.

With Bowling Green's win against Dayton, the Silver Hawks remain two games behind the Hot Rods in the first-half wildcard chase.

Taylor Siemens (4-1) earned his second straight win in relief, allowing one earned run on two hits over three innings. The left-hander struck out one and did not walk anybody. Noah Syndergaard (3-1) did not make it out of the fifth inning and allowed six earned runs on five hits over 0.2 innings.

Both starters went four innings. Tyler Green started for South Bend and hurled four scoreless innings with four walks and three strikeouts. Lansing starter Anthony DeSclafani allowed one earned run on three hits over four frames.

With the game tied 1-1 entering the last of the fifth inning, South Bend opened up an 8-1 lead, striking for seven runs on six hits. Josh Parr started the scoring with an RBI single. Chris Ellison followed with a sacrifice fly, Tom Belza added an RBI single and Montilla clubbed his fourth home run of the season, an opposite field two-run home run. After Syndergaard departed, Aleson Escalante entered and gave up a long two-run home run to Pena.

The Silver Hawks took an early lead in the third inning on an RBI ground out from Parr. Jon Berti tied the game for Lansing with an RBI single in the top of the fifth, moments before South Bend's seven-run uprising.

The Silver Hawks recorded single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to open up an 11-1 advantage. The win was the Silver Hawks largest margin of victory in 2012.

Matt Helm and Montilla each recorded three hits for the Silver Hawks, who reached the 16-hit plateau for a second straight night. Bryan Henry, Ender Inciarte, Ellison and Pena each recorded two hits for South Bend. The Silver Hawks have scored 35 runs in their last four games.
