Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
For the first time this season, the River Bandits and their opponent headed into extra innings scoreless. In the tenth inning, Burlington scored once and the River Bandits answered back with two runs, capped by a Luis Mateo single through the left side that gave Quad Cities a 2-1 walk-off win over the Bees in front of 3,684 fans Saturday night at Modern Woodmen Park.
David Medina doubled to right center off of reliever Jose Macias (2-5) to lead off the bottom of the tenth inning. Nick Martini was inserted as a pinch runner for the Quad Cities' right fielder. A fielding error by shortstop Sean Jamieson allowed Roberto De La Cruz to reach first base and after a Matt Williams' walk, River Bandits' catcher Casey Rasmus singled to tie the game. With the bases still loaded and no outs, Luis Mateo gave the River Bandits (28-28) the win with a single to left field in his first game back from an injury, scoring De La Cruz from third
In the top half of the tenth, the Bees had taken a 1-0 lead on a single by center fielder Aaron Shipman off Quad Cities' right-hander Heath Wyatt (2-2). Neither team had a runner reach third base until the tenth, when Rashun Dixon advanced to third on a wild pitch by Wyatt. He later scored on the Shipman single.
Quad Cities' right-hander Tyrell Jenkins allowed three hits in the first two innings, but through the next four innings, he allowed just one hit. Jenkins did not factor into the decision, but threw six scoreless innings, with Burlington managing only four hits and three walks, while striking out five times.
Right-handed Burlington (25-30) starter Raul Alcantara matched Jenkins with a strong outing of his own, allowing four hits through six shutout innings, walking just one and striking out six.
Right-hander Travis Miller pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Jenkins, allowing just two base runners - one via walk and another via base hit.
After pitching three scoreless innings, Macias failed to retire a hitter in the tenth, with all five Quad Cities' hitters reaching base in the frame.
Burlington and Quad Cities will play the second game of the three-game series Sunday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Left-hander Jonathan Cornelius (1-1) will start for Quad Cities and right-hander A.J. Cole (1-0) will start for Burlington.
