Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons' four run lead was not enough to fend off the West Michigan Whitecaps Saturday at Dow Diamond, who defeated the home team 7-4 in front of 4,396 fans.
The loss drops the Loons to 28-28 for the year and fourth place in the Midwest League's eastern division behind Lansing (38-17), Bowling Green (31-25), South Bend (29-27) with 14 games to go in the season's first half. Only first and second place qualifies for playoffs.
"It's tough," Loons left fielder Scott Schebler said of dropping game one. "Especially when it's getting down to it. It's always tough to lose the first one, but it's double-tough when you're going into playoff mode."
The Whitecaps took the lead when Loons reliever Joel Lima entered the game in the sixth with two on and one out. After inducing Aaron Westlake into a groundout, Jason Krizan knocked a two-run single off Lima to give the Whitecaps the lead. West Michigan picked up two insurance runs in the ninth to seal the deal.
Starting for the Loons, Jarret Martin tore through the eight Whitecaps to recapture the Midwest League lead in strikeouts with a season total of 63. He limited West Michigan to four hits through 5.1 innings, but was unable to get away unscathed and allowed five runs. Martin took the loss, his fourth, while Lima was charged with a blown save. Yimi Garcia pitched in the ninth inning to allow two earned runs to the "ËCaps on three hits and two walks.
The Loons found their big inning in the third, when Schebler ripped a double to the wall in right-center field to plate three Loons runs and make it 4-0. Schebler's 16th double of the season scored Jesus Arredondo and O'Koyea Dickson, who both reached on walks, and James Baldwin who had singled to get on base. Great Lakes' first run came in the second from Jesse Bosnik's hit to right.
The Loons will host game two of their three-game set with the West Michigan Whitecaps on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Starting for the Loons will be RHP Jose Dominguez (2-2, 5.63) against the Whitecaps RHP Marcelo Carreno (1-4, 3.74). Prior to the game, the Loons will host a free Youth Clinic beginning at 11 a.m. presented by Farm Bureau Insurance. After the game, kids will have the opportunity to run the bases. It's also Biker Day, featuring a pre-game bike parade, presented by the Midland Community Center.
The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
