Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, Iowa - For the second time this season, Jamal Austin provided a walk-off winner for the Clinton LumberKings. Austin hit a 2-1 pitch from Carmine Giardina off the foul pole in left field for a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth for a 4-3 win.

Austin provided the game winner back on April 14th against Beloit when he singled up the middle to score Jean Acevedo in the 11th inning for a 4-3 win over the Snappers.

The scoring started in the first inning when Ji-Man Choi knocked in Austin who walked to lead off the inning. They added another run in the second inning when Dillon Hazlett singled to right center to score Guillermo Pimentel. They had runners at the corners with nobody out but Anthony Phillips lined into a 6-3 double play to kill the threat.

The Kernels got on the board in the third inning on a run-scoring single by second baseman Kevin Koesquit to trim the lead to 2-1. They took the lead in the fourth when they loaded the bases against Richard Vargas and Chevy Clarke came through with a two-out, two-run single for a 3-2 lead.

Kernels starter Jairo Diaz settled down and pitched seven innings and the Clinton bullpen consisting of Andrew Kittredge, Stephen Shackleford and Tim Griffin combined for 5 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball.

Phillips struck out to start the ninth against Giardina and then Austin ended it on the fourth pitch he saw from the left-hander to give the LumberKings back-to-back wins. The crowd of 5,215 was the largest crowd in Clinton since June 11, 2010 against the Fort Wayne TinCaps when the attendance was 5,408. The walk-off home run was the first by a LumberKing since April 20, 2010 when Nick Franklin homered against Burlington in the bottom of the tenth inning.

Clinton and Cedar Rapids will play game two of the three-game set on Sunday afternoon at Ashford University Field. Right-hander Ambioris Hidalgo (2-7, 5.23) starts for the LumberKings and right-hander Cam Bedrosian (0-5, 6.41) toes the rubber for the Kernels. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
