Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
BELOIT, WI - The Beloit Snappers bombarded the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers for nine runs in the middle of the game Saturday night at Pohlman Field. It was enough for the Snappers to defeat Wisconsin 9-5. Both teams are 34-22 on the season and are tied for the lead in the Midwest League's Western Division with fourteen games remaining in the first half.
Both teams broke the ice in the fourth inning. Wisconsin got a pair of runs in the top of the inning. Brandon Macias doubled and would later score on a single by Jason Rogers. Rogers scored on a wild pitch by Beloit starting pitcher Matt Summers.
The Snappers answered the Rattlers runs with five of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning. The first three batters reached against Wisconsin starter Matt Miller on a double, a single, and a hit batsman. Then, Matt Koch doubled in a pair of runs to tie the game. Kyle Knudson lined the next pitch to center for a two-run single to put the Snappers up 4-2 and there were still no outs in the inning. Miller would allow one more run in the inning on a two-out, RBI single by Eddie Rosario.
The Rattlers loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth inning, but looked like they would miss an opportunity. But, a popup to third off the bat of Nick Ramirez was dropped by Sano. Two runs scored and Wisconsin pulled to within a run.
But, Beloit rallied for four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The first two batters of the inning reached on singles against Miller to put runners on first and third. Those were the ninth and tenth hits of the game given up by Miller and that forced a call to the bullpen. Stephen Peterson took over for Miller and got a force out at second that allowed a run to score.
A walk, a balk, and an intentional walk loaded the bases and AJ Pettersen made the score 7-4. Another walk reloaded the bases and Nate Roberts drove a two-run single to center to put Beloit up 9-4.
Wisconsin scored a run in the sixth on a single by Macias. The third hit of the game by the Rattlers third baseman pulled the Rattlers to within 9-5, but that was the last run of the game.
The top two teams in the division at the end of the first half will qualify for the Midwest League playoffs. Wisconsin and Beloit are both five games up on third place Kane County after the Cougars lost 15-3 at home to the Peoria Chiefs on Saturday night.
Game two of the three game series is Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field. Drew Gagnon (3-1, 3.18) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Tyler Jones (0-0, 1.29) is set to start for the Snappers. Game time is 2:00pm.
Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm.
