Lansing Lugnuts News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Home runs by Gerson Montilla and Fidel Pena fueled a seven-run fifth inning, and the South Bend Silver Hawks (29-27) went on to rout the Lansing Lugnuts (38-17), 11-1, on Saturday night at The Cove.
For the first time this season, the Lugnuts have lost three games in a row, their longest losing streak of the season.
The eleven runs allowed are the most Lansing's pitching staff has surrendered this season; the seven runs in the fifth are the most allowed in one inning by the staff; the ten run loss is their worst margin of defeat in 2012.
Noah Syndergaard (Loss, 3-1) allowed five runs on five hits in his 2/3 of an inning, including Montilla's fourth home run of the year. Aleson Escalante entered to record the final out of the frame, but not before serving up a two-run homer to Pena.
Anthony DeSclafani threw well for Lansing in his sixth start of the season, four innings of three-hit ball in which the righty gave up just one run, walked none and struck out two.
South Bend starter Tyler Green battled some control issues and walked four, but allowed just one run over a four-inning no-decision with three strikeouts.
South Bend lefty Taylor Siemens (Win, 4-1) vultured the victory, tossing three innings while giving up solely a two-out RBI single to Jon Berti in the fifth.
The Lugnuts offense has scored just two runs in their last 26 offensive innings and are 2-for-23 with runners in scoring position in the last three games.
The Lugs continue their six-game road trip with the second of a three-game series against the Silver Hawks on Sunday, June 3rd at 2:05 p.m. Left-hander David Rollins (4-0, 3.33) starts for Lansing opposite South Bend's Blake Perry (0-1, 7.71).
The Lugnuts will return home for a six-game homestand beginning on Wednesday, June 6th, at 7:05 p.m. with a Ladies Night against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
