Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE) - The Charlotte Knights were held to a season-low two hits as the Norfolk Tides tallied eleven on their way to a 5-0 victory in game one of a weekend series at BB&T Ballpark to maintain their place atop the International League South Division standings.
The Tides sent knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa to the mound for Friday night's matchup, and the 30-year-old allowed only two hits over 6.0 innings pitched while striking out five.
RHP Jorge Rondon entered the game in the seventh inning and spun two perfect innings in relief of Gamboa before RHP Dane De La Rosa hurled a hitless ninth inning to finish off the two-hit shutout.
Derrik Gibson got the Tides on the 'board in the third inning when he led off the frame with a double and later scored on a Henry Urrutia single. Paul Janish - who had struck out and reached base on a wild pitch earlier in the inning - would then score on a fielding error to push the lead to 2-0. Urrutia then came around to score on a Nolan Reimold single to complete a three-run frame for the Tides.
The three-run inning would be the only damage done against Knights starter RHP Erik Johnson, who would be saddled with the loss after scattering nine hits over 6.0 innings pitched while striking out five.
Jarrett Casey would relieve Johnson to begin the seventh inning, and after retiring the first two batters of the inning, the Tides would push their lead to 5-0 with back-to-back solo home runs by Dariel Alvarez and Chris Parmelee. The home runs were the first two allowed by Casey this season.
Leury Garcia reached base twice as he singled and walked in the game, maintaining his team-high .299 batting average. Drew Garcia also contributed one of the Knights hits - a double in the sixth frame.
The loss dropped the Knights a game back of the Tides for first place in the International League South Division, but the teams continue their three-game series on Saturday as the Knights send RHP Scott Carroll to the mound for the 7:05 p.m. matchup. The Saturday night game brings another KnightinGals performance, presented by Hickory Tavern.
