The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the final game of a two-game set, 10-2, against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Friday night at NBT Bank Stadium. Syracuse squared the score in the ninth but gave up eight runs in the 11th to lose the game in extra innings.
Syracuse (17-38) got on the board in the first inning against Luis Severino. Darin Mastroianni led off the game with a four-pitch walk against Severino. Then, Tony Gwynn Jr. and Emmanuel Burriss hit back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs. Mark Minicozzi followed with a ground-ball double play to the shortstop Nick Noonan to plate Mastroianni to give the Chiefs an early 1-0 lead.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (30-26) tied the score in the top of the third inning against Paolo Espino. Rob Segedin led off the inning with a double to right-center field. Two batters later, Noonan advanced Segedin to third with a ground ball to the second baseman Josh Johnson. With two outs, Rob Refsnyder grounded a single into left field to square the game at one.
The RailRiders took the lead in the top of the fourth inning off the bat of Ben Gamel. With one out, Gamel launched the Espino 1-1 offering over the right-field wall. Gamel's third home run of the season gave Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 2-1 lead.
Espino was dominant for Syracuse on Friday night. He pitched seven innings for the second time in three starts. The right-hander surrendered two runs on six hits and struck out five against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Espino's ERA is now at 1.76 in three starts for the Chiefs.
Syracuse came back in the bottom of the ninth inning with a two-out rally to tie the score at two. After Jose Ramirez struck out the first two Chiefs in the inning, the newest Chief, Mario Lisson, reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop Noonan. Then, Caleb Ramsey legged out an infield single to put two on with two outs. Ramirez threw a wild pitch to advance the runners to second and third and then allowed a walk to Dan Butler. Johnson followed Butler with a single to right field to plate pinch-runner Jason Martinson to square the score. However, Ramsey was thrown out by right fielder Gamel to send the game to extras, tied at two.
The score remained tied until the top of the 11th inning until the RailRiders struck eight times against Eric Fornataro and Josh Johnson. Refsnyder led off the frame with a single to left field. Kyle Roller followed Refsnyder with a single to right field. With two men on and no out, Austin Romine blooped a single to center to plate the go-ahead run and give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 3-2 lead. After a single by Gamel loaded the bases, Mason Williams lined a single to right to plate another RailRiders run. Fornataro issued a walk to Taylor Dugas to force in another run to increase the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lead to three. Another run was forced in after Segedin was hit by a pitch to make the score 6-2. Johnson replaced Fornataro and walked Figueroa to increase the lead to five. Noonan drove in two more with a double down the right-field line. Refsnyder capped off the eight-run inning with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Chiefs begin a two-game weekend series with the Pawtucket Red Sox on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Syracuse sends P.J. Walters out to the mound for his first start since being acquired in a trade on June 1st. The PawSox counter the Chiefs with right-hander Jess Todd.
