Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Mud Hens got things rolling in the first game of their homestand Friday night against the Columbus Clippers in front of 8,145. Toledo used a balanced attack on both ends of the ball receving large contributions on the hill from starting pitcher Buck Farmer, and at the dish from Dixon Machado and Xavier Avery .

Buck Farmer took the hill for the first time since his spot start with the Detroit, and picked up right where he left off. The big right hander cruised through seven, with all of his arsenal working for him against the Columbus lineup . Through twenty seven batters, Farmer allowed just one run on five hits and sent four Clippers back to the dugout via the strikeout. Farmer continues to rise in the International league strikeout standings (4th) with his fifty three punchouts and has a record of (6-1).

The Bats came out hot Friday night combining for six runs on thirteen hits. The Brunt off the blow for the Hens came in the second, starting with a Jefry Marte blast (7) to get Toledo on the board against Columbus starter TJ House. However, the offense was not done in the second as the Hens' loaded the bases with back to back hits from Steven Moya and Jeff McVaney, along with a Brendan Harris hit by pitch. All three runners would come around to score in the second pushing the Toledo lead to four which would remain in tact.

Dixon Machado led the offense in his first home game back after his big league stint with Detroit. The Shortstop finished 3 for 5 at the plate with two RBI singles in both the second and sixth innings.

For Columbus, a one run seventh was the only threat they could muster up all evening off of Toledo starter Buck Farmer. Francisco Lindor and Zach Walters each finished with two hits a piece for the Clippers. Drew VerHagen, and Rafael Dolis were summoned from the Hen pen after Farmer's exit in the seventh and the pair surrendered just one Columbus run.

Toledo and Columbus are back in action tomorrow at 7:00 PM. The game looks to be a must see as Detroit Tigers starter Justin Verlander will be toeing the slab for the Hens, as he continues his rehab assignment. Verlander won the 2011 Cy Young Award, along with the 2011 MVP award.
