Norfolk Tides News Release

August 29, 2006 - Yusaku Iriki pitched six shutout innings and Norfolk pounded out 17 hits as the Tides outslugged the Louisville Bats 10-0 Tuesday night from Harbor Park.

Iriki (3-8) received plenty of run support, although the 34-year-old right-hander did not need it against one of the top teams in the IL. Iriki allowed just five hits and one walk while striking out four, pitching the Tides to their fifth shutout in their last seven wins.

The Tides struck for five runs in the bottom of the first, collecting four hits off of Louisville starter Phil Dumatrait (5-7). Edgardo Alfonzo and Ruben Gotay opened the scoring with back-to-back two-run doubles, and Rashad Eldridge followed with an RBI single to stake the Tides to a 5-0 lead.

Norfolk has now scored in the first inning of eight of their last ten games.

The Tides extended their lead later in the contest courtesy of multiple home runs. Tagg Bozied hit a solo shot in the third inning, and Alfonzo hit his third as a member of the Tides in the seventh, also a solo blast. Eldridge closed the scoring with a two-run fly to right field later in the seventh frame, marking the first time this season that Norfolk has homered three times in a game at home.

The game was delayed due to rain for 42 minutes with two outs in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Norfolk will continue their season-ending eight-game homestand Wednesday night as they welcome the Indianapolis Indians to town for a two-game set. Brian Bannister (2-3, 4.63) is scheduled to take the hill for Norfolk against Indy right-hander John Van Benschoten (1-0, 5.06), with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m.
