TONIGHT'S GAMES: The first and second games of two game series and the 11th and 12th of 12 meetings vs. the Indians. The fifth and sixth of six at The Diamond. Richmond is 3-7 vs. the Indians, 2-2 at The Diamond. Games two and three of a five game home stand, their final of the season (Richmond is 1-0). The 45th and 46th of 48 meetings vs. West Division clubs (Braves are 14-30 vs. the West) and the 21st and 22nd of 24 contests at home vs. the West (Richmond is 8-12). The Braves were 4-8 vs. the Indians last season, 2-4 at The Diamond. The Braves are 54-73 all-time vs. Indianapolis. The Braves are tied for third with Norfolk in the South, 25 games behind first place Charlotte. Indians are in first place in the West Division, a half game up on Toledo and Louisville.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME- Was suspended by rain in the top of the third inning. When the game is picked up tonight, the Indians will have Vic Butler (walk) on at second and Craig Stansberry (hit by pitch) on at first with one out. Mike Edwards will be the hitter with no count. The Indians took advantage of two walks and two throwing errors by the Braves to score a run in the top of the first. The Braves took the lead in the home half on a three run home run by Brian Jordan following two walks. The game was delayed by 22 minutes prior to the start due to rain. The contest is still scheduled for nine innings.
IF THE GAME IS SUSPENDED IT MUST BE INDIANAPOLIS: The Braves have had three games suspended by rain this season. The Indians have been the opponent all three times. The Braves and Indians had two games suspended by rain in the same series at Indianapolis in June. Lat night's contest was the first suspended by rain at he Diamond this season. The Braves are 1-1 in suspended games this season. For statistical purposes tonight's games do not count as a doubleheader, although the second game (tonight's regularly scheduled game) is slated for seven innings. The Braves have been rained out four times this season, three times at home.
TOUGH ON THE HILL: Jonathan Johnson has 12 strikeouts in his last 7.1 innings. He has allowed just two earned runs in his last 12 outings over 18.2 innings pitched (0.96 ERA). Kyle Davies has allowed just one run in 15 innings on his rehab assignment. Manny Acosta has not allowed a run in his last four appearances over four innings. Will Startup has allowed one earned run in his last nine appearances over 10.2 innings (0.85 ERA). After allowing four runs in his first two outings with the Braves, Rich Scalamandre has not allowed a run in six straight appearances over seven innings.
NUMBER CRUNCHING: Carlos Mendez has hits in three straight games (4-12 .333). Scott Thorman had hits in three straight games (5-13 .385). Cesar Crespo has hits in three straight games (3-9 .333). Richmond has a winning record against South Division clubs (23-21). They are a combined 34 games under .500 vs. the North and West. The Braves have 12 wins in August, equaling the most wins they've had in a month this season (12 in May). Braves pitchers are 17-80 at the plate (.213). Richmond pinch hitters are 8-55 (.145). The Braves are 17-27 vs. National League affiliates. They are in a stretch of seven straight games vs. NL clubs. Norfolk is the only club Richmond has a winning record against this season. The Braves have made 107 roster moves this season. 18 R-Braves have been promoted to Atlanta this season. Eight players, including four currently with the club, have been assigned to Richmond on MLB rehab assignments.
