Charlotte Knights News Release

Fort Mill, S.C.- After jumping out to an early lead, the Charlotte Knights (78-59) were able to hang on for a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Clippers (67-71) on Tuesday night.

The Clippers struck in the top of the first as Russ Johnson took a Charlie Haeger fastball over the left field wall putting the Clippers up 1-0.

The Knights wasted no time as they put a four spot on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Jerry Owens, who is down from Chicago on a Major League rehab assignment, led off the inning with a walk and then quickly stole second for his 38th stolen base of the year.

Jorge Velandia then drove Steven White's offering into right center for his 23 double of the season and tying the game at 1. Velandia then moved up to third on a Ryan Sweeney groundout and was able to score as Josh Fields blooped a single into right.

With one out Casey Rogowski ended the scoring in the first as he connected on his 13th homerun of the season.

After the rough first inning Clippers starting pitcher Steven White was able to keep the Knights in check allowing just 1 more hit. White however picked up the loss falling to 3-9 on the season, as the 4 runs were enough for Haeger and the Knights bullpen.

Haeger (14-6) pitched six innings and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out three on his way to his International League leading 14 victory of the season.

After a Russ Johnson single in the top half of the six Mitch Jones gave the Clippers their only other offensive charge as he took a Haeger fastball to left field moving the Clippers to within one run. However, that is as close as they would get.

Tim Redding, Dustin Hermanson and Boone Logan combined to shut down the Clippers for the final three innings. The trio did not allow a hit while striking out five of the nine batters they faced.

The Clippers will travel to Durham while the Knights will take on the Toledo Mud Hens in a two game set with first pitch slated for 7:15 p.m.
