Syracuse Mets News Release

BARKER BREAKS ANOTHER RECORD

SkyChiefs first-baseman Kevin Barker wrote his name in the Syracuse record books for the second time this year by hitting his Modern Franchise Record (1961-present) breaking 39th double at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last night. Barker breaks the previous mark of 38 doubles hit by Robert Perez in 1995. Barker set a Modern Franchise Single Game Record with six hits versus Ottawa on Thursday May 18th. Barker went 6-6 with two home runs, two doubles and two singles breaking the single game record shared by 39 players that had five hits in a game, the last being Simon Pond, June 25, 2003. With 2 more home runs and 4 more RBI, Barker would become the first player with 20HR and 80 RBI in back-to-back season since Hank Sauer in 1946 and 1947.

ON THE DOUBLE BUBBLE

Syracuse collected five doubles last night giving them 276 on the season. The SkyChiefs trail the IL doubles leading Buffalo Bisons by just one to-bagger. The last time that Syracuse lead the IL in doubles as a team was 1982. Seven different Syracuse players have 20 or more doubles on the season.

SEVEN IN SEVEN

SkyChiefs catcher Curtis Thigpen has collected at least one hit in each of his first 7 Triple-A games. Thigpen is hitting .321 with 3 2B and 6 RBI since his promotion from Double-A and the team is 5-2 with him behind the dish.

LIND CONTINUES TO SHINE

Rookie outfielder Adam Lind went 3-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two runs batted in last night improving his average to .376 on the season for Syracuse. Lind has reached base at least once in 19 of the last 20 games. Over the last 18 games he has reached base at least twice 13 times and is hitting .458 (27-59) with 10 runs scored, five doubles, two home runs and nine runs batted in while walking twelve times compared to six strikeouts. In just 32 games played in Triple-A Lind has been intentionally walked five times already.

VERMILYEA ADJUSTING TO BEING BACK IN THE PEN

Jamie Vermilyea spent most of this season as a starter (17 starts in 24 appearances) but recently has moved back to the SkyChiefs bullpen. In his last two appearances out of the bullpen the right-hander has tossed five scoreless innings, including three last night, allowing just two hits, and has not walked a batter while striking out five opponents. After earning the win in last night's contest Vermilyea is now 2-0 with a save and a 3.38 ERA in seven appearances as a reliever. On June 11th versus Columbus the University of New Mexico product tied a Modern Franchise for most strikeouts by a reliever, striking out eight Clippers in four innings.

THAT'S HOW I SPELL RELIEF

In the last two games the SkyChiefs bullpen has pitched 7.2 scoreless innings allowing just two hits, has not walked a batter and have struck out five. Over the last 10 games the bullpen has combined to go 4-2 with 2 saves and on the season they are 30-19 with 37 saves.

K-MEN

The Syracuse pitching staff is second in the IL with 998 strikeouts on the season and broke the Modern Franchise record of 976 strikeouts set by last year's team.

MOTTOLA WATCH

SkyChiefs outfielder Chad Mottola belted his 113th double as a SkyChief last Tuesday night moving him ahead Rick Bladt for third on the All-Time two-bag list. Ed Shokes stands second with 115. Mottola also stands third on the All-Time HR list with 83, thirteen behind second-place Hank Sauer

HOPING FOR A HAPPIER HOMECOMING

Jessup, PA resident Wayne Lydon is 0-13 in his lat three games at Lackawanna County Stadium this season and 2-23 overall in six games.
