Thunder Opens Home Stretch with Win
January 7, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder defeated the Missouri Mavericks 6-4 at the INTRUST Bank Arena on Friday night.
Aaron Davis scored two goals, while the Thunder survived a late rally by the Mavs to hang on for the victory.
Trailing 1-0, the Thunder powered their way in front with a five-goal second period. Bobby Hughes started the attack, firing a wrist shot past the right of Mavericks' goaltender Rob Nolan. A.J. Gale ripped a one-timer from the right circle at 9:24 to make it 2-1. Gale was setup by Chris Greene who carried the puck up the slot before making the pass.
At 11:13 in the second, Robin Richards capped off a series of long shots with an attempt that deflected off a Missouri defender and into the net. Davis picked up a feed from Troy Schwab and made it 4-1 Wichita at 15:23. Schwab passed from the right side of the goal line to Davis who was waiting in the slot. Davis slammed home his second of the night at 18:31, beating Nolan to the right on a cross-slot pass from Matt Robinson.
Missouri scored three times in the third, including two goals just 20 seconds apart near the end of the period to pull within one. Toby Lafrance snuck a shot under the five-hole of Marc-Antoine Gelinas at 2:55 to cut the Thunder lead to 5-2. Olivier Filion trimmed the lead to 5-3 at 16:40 and was followed by Carlyle Lewis's score at 17:00 from the right circle. Wichita persevered over the final 1:42 while Missouri worked with an extra attacker. Daniel Tetrault iced the game with 41 seconds left, hitting an empty net from his own end with a bankshot off the penalty box boards.
The Mavericks scored the first goal of the night at 14:55 in the first. After Gelinas used a stick save to stop a Missouri two-on-one, Derek Pallardy cashed in the rebound which had bounced off the endboard.
Gelinas earned the win, saving 27 of 31. Nolan took the loss, going 23 of 28. Wichita was 0 for 2 on the power play while Missouri was 0 for 4.
The Thunder hosts the Bloomington Prairie Thunder Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the arena box office at (316) 755-SEAT or visit the Thunder's official website at www.wichitathunder.com.
