Richards Reaches 800 CHL Points in RiverKings Win

January 7, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Mississippi RiverKings News Release

LAREDO, TX --- Chris Richards' 800th career Central Hockey League (CHL) point on a power play goal in the second period highlighted the Mississippi RiverKings' 3-2 victory over the Laredo Bucks in action on Friday, January 7th in Laredo, Texas.

Mississippi opened the scoring in the first twenty seconds of the game, when Brennan Sarazin's backhander found the back of the net for his first goal of the year. The goal came in his first shift since being returned from the injured reserve, where he's been since November 28th.

The RiverKings took a 2-0 lead in the second period on Richards' tenth goal of the season, a power play goal at 3:57 of the middle session. Jeff Christian and Derek Landmesser assisted on Richards' 800th CHL point in his career, as he became just the fifth CHL player to reach that production level.

Laredo came back and scored a power play goal just over three minutes later at 6:58 to get back in the game off the stick of Daniel Koger.

But, the RiverKings regained their two-goal lead in the final minute of play in the second period on a penalty shot goal by Jeff Christian. He was hooked on a breakaway effort and scored the goal on the backhand for his tenth goal of the year at 19:25 for a 3-1 second intermission advantage.

The Bucks would get back within one at 3-2 in the third period on a red-lighter from Justin Styffe at 9:39, but could get no further.

Both teams took 24 shots in the contest. Mississippi's Larry Sterling earned the win with a 22-save performance, while Torrie Jung took the loss for Laredo with 21 saves.

Both teams also scored once on the power play, as the RiverKings were 1-for-6 with the man advantage and Laredo finished 1-for-5.

With the win, Mississippi moved to 16-16-1 with a chance to go above .500 heading into the All-Star break when the two teams meet again at 7:30 PM. Laredo fell to 11-15-5 with the loss.

Friday night's game was the first for new RiverKings defenseman Martin Kubaliak, and also the first since being activated from the injured reserve for Sarazin, who played just six games before being placed on the IR on November 28th.
