Jacks Make It Five Straight, 5-3 Over Texas

N. RICHLAND HILLS - Patrick Mbaraga's empty-net goal with eight seconds to play closed the door on a third-period rush by the Texas Brahmas and sealed a 5-3 win for the Odessa Jackalopes on Friday night at the Nytex Sports Centre. It was the fifth straight for the Jacks, while Sebastien Thinel picked up three points in the win.
With the win the Jackalopes extend their lead over Texas to three points for third place in the CHL's Berry Conference. Thinel's three points also keep him at the top of the league with 57 this year.
Dominic Leveille and Alex Dunn each scored first period, power play goals to give the Jacks a 2-0 lead. The score would stay unchanged until two minutes into the third period when Thinel extend the scored to 3-0.
Texas responded with two goals in four minutes from Chad Woollard and Greg Hogeboom to make it a one-goal game. Dave Van Drunen's slap shot from the right point deflected off a Brahmas player and in the net to make it 4-2 with 9:17 to play. Hogeboom scored again on a breakaway with 6:33 remaining before Mbaraga's empty-netter.
Michel Robinson stopped 19 shots in the win for the Jackalopes, while Kevin Beech made 18 saves in the losing effort for Texas.
The two teams close their weekend set on Saturday at 7:30 PM CST. The action can be heard on Classic Rock 102.1 FM.
The Odessa Jackalopes are the Central Hockey League affiliate for the NHL's New York Islanders and the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The team is currently in the middle of its 14th season.
