Kalamazoo Wings News Release

EVANSVILLE, IN- The Kalamazoo Wings generated a season-high 43 shots on goal, but were shut down by the Evansville Icemen, 3-2, on Saturday night at the Ford Center in Evansville.

The opening frame featured stellar goaltending, highlighted by 14 saves, and a penalty shot stop from Joel Martin. His counterpart, Cody Reichard, made 12 first period stops for the Icemen, but couldn't keep a clean slate through the first 20 minutes. While working on a power play late in the first, Tyler Shattock gave the Wings a 1-0 lead. Shattock poached a loose puck in front of the goal and poked it in for his sixth of the season, as Lane Scheidl and Ludwig Blomstrand registered assists.

Evansville had some hop in their step out of the gates in period number two, as they erased the one-goal deficit just 2:19 into the frame. Springing an odd-man rush down the ice, the Icemen connected on a series of tic-tac-toe passes that ended on the tape of Ryan Penny, who buried his second of the season.

Minutes later, the Icemen would score their second unanswered goal on the Wings. Justin MacDonald carried the puck to the outside wall of the right wing, and pushed a wrist shot over the pad of Martin and into the goal, giving Evansville a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Period number three started as it ended for the Icemen, as they added to their lead with a power play marker a few minutes in. Daulton Levielle received a feed from Nathan Moon and was able to beat Martin to give Evansville a 3-1 lead in the third.

Though facing a two-goal shortfall, the Wings wouldn't go away quietly. With under six to play in the third period, Dane Fox rifled a shot from the right circle that was re-directed by David Gilbert and off the pad of Reichard. The rebound found the stick of Alex Mallet who poked in his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

After pulling Martin for an extra attacker, Kalamazoo created a series of chances, but Reichard shut the door and sealed the victory for Evansville.
