Allen Americans News Release
Wichita, Kansas - The Allen Americans started another three games in three days against the Wichita Thunder at the Intrust Bank Arena, leaving with a 3-0 victory.
The Americans got off to a quick start with a Chad Costello goal, but the highlight of the first period was undoubtedly the starting goaltender, Riley Gill. He saw 21 shots in the first period, and had to stand on his head to make a few of those stops. Vincent Arseneau made his presence known in an otherwise uneventful first period. A big Arseneau hit garnered some post-whistle attention from Theo Peckham, giving them both unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
Allen was able to find a little more offense as the second period played on. The Americans cashed in on a Casey Pierro-Zabotel Power Play goal on a rebound. Riley Gill continued to impress as the Thunder were unable to crack his code. Tempers continued to flare as Thunder enforcers Theo Peckham and Michael Neal were thorns in the sides of the Americans.
Another Power Play opportunity in the third period gave the Americans a 3-0 lead on a rebound goal for Justin Baker. A controversial penalty call comes off of a big hit from Logan Nelson on Justin Courtnall in the corner. That hit inspired the road captain Gary Steffes to stand up for his teammate as he dropped the gloves with Nelson.
Effort was brought into question by head coach Steve Martinson after the 4-1 Tuesday loss to the Missouri Mavericks. There was no question of persistence in this one as none of the Allen goals were highlight reel worthy. It came down to grinding harder when it mattered. The Americans took advantage of two Power Play opportunities on goals from Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Justin Baker. Along with the Costello goal, all three tallies happened in close to the net and off of rebounds chances. Speaking of great effort, Allen has much thanks to give towards Riley Gill, who finished the night perfect with 44 saves. Allen put up 34 shots on the Thunder in the win.
