
Baier Scores Twice as Solar Bears Fall 4-3 in Shootout to Cyclones

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Orlando Solar Bears (8-3-1-2), proud affiliate of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and AHL's Toronto Marlies, completed their five-game road trip with a 4-3 shootout loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones (9-3-1-1) in front of a crowd on 5,117 on Saturday night at U.S. Bank Arena.
Joe Wilson opened the scoring for Cincinnati when he tucked a backhand past Rob Madore at 13:20.
Orlando tied the score on the power play in the second period when Eric Baier blasted a slapshot from the high slot past Brandon Whitney at 5:16.
Branden Gracel pulled the Cyclones ahead 2-1 when he lunged at a loose puck and flung it past Madore at 9:54.
Baier evened the score again for the Solar Bears in the third period when he broke in during a two-on-one shorthanded situation and buried a shot above the glove of Whitney at 6:43 to give Orlando its ECHL-leading sixth shorthanded marker of the season.
Lindsay Sparks gave Orlando its first lead of the evening when he buried a rebound of T.J. Foster past a sprawled Whitney at 13:14.
The Cyclones tied the score at 3-3 when Jack Downing received a pass in the slot and jammed it into the net at 15:59.
Overtime yielded no score; the game would be decided in the fifth round of the shootout when Gracel beat Madore, and Foster was denied by Whitney.
Madore took the shootout loss with 21 saves on 24 shots against; Whitney earned the win with 24 saves on 27 shots against.
