April 1, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Toronto Marlies News Release

The St. John's Maple Leafs announced that the hockey club will add three new members to their Media Wall of Fame located in the Bob Cole Media Center at Mile One Stadium. The Maple Leafs will induct Bernie Bennett, the late Jim Browne and Bill Callahan. They will be joining an honor role that includes Bob Cole, Bob Badcock, Aubrey MacDonald, George MacLaren, Dee Murphy and Ted Withers.

Bernnie Bennett devoted 24 years to sport reporting between 1960 and 1984. He started at The Daily News and continued with the Evening Telegram prior to switching to general news reporting. Bennett provided day-to-day, game-to-game coverage of more sports than any other reporter during this period of time. Hockey was his beat during the winter and soccer during the summer.

Bill Callahan started his sports reporting career with the Western Star in Corner Brook. He exerted extremely large beneficial influences on a variety of sports but especially hockey during his eight years as sports director for CJON Television and Radio in St. John's. Following his sports reporting era, Callahan moved into the managing editor and publisher roles with several newspapers.

From the early 1950's to the late 1960's, Jim Browne was a major factor and important contributor to sports reporting, especially in the St. John's area but in fact all over the province. As a radio sports announcer and as a newspaper sports reporter Browne covered every aspect of sport on a year-round basis.

The induction ceremony will take place Wednesday, April 2nd at 5:45pm in the Media Lounge before the Maple Leafs home game against the Manitoba Moose.
