Vermette Captures Rookie of the Month Honors

April 1, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Senators proudly announce that center Antoine Vermette has been named the American Hockey League's Rookie of the Month for the month of March. Vermette's selection marks the second time that a Senator has been selected for the monthly award. Jason Spezza, currently on recall with the parent Ottawa Senators, garnered the January Rookie of the Month honor.

Vermette's month featured six multiple-point efforts and three multiple-goal games, including his first professional hat trick on Mar. 7 in a 3-1 victory over Albany. He scored two goals each on Mar. 2 (vs. Syracuse) and Mar. 14 (vs. Saint John), and wound up with a seven-game scoring streak from Mar. 2-15, netting eight goals and four assists in that span.

A second-round pick by the Ottawa Senators (55th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Vermette leads all AHL rookies with 34 goals, 13 power play goals, is tied for first with three shorthanded markers, tied for second with seven game-winners, and ranks third with 59 points in 76 games with Binghamton this season. A member of the 2002-03 AHL All-Rookie Team, the 20-year-old Vermette missed most of the 2001-02 campaign with a neck injury, but has bounced back in his first pro season to lead the East Division-leading BSens in scoring.

With four regular season games remaining, Binghamton holds a four-point lead on second place Bridgeport. The Sens' magic number sits at four (combination of Binghamton points gained and Bridgeport points lost) to clinch the East Division title in its inaugural season. Binghamton closes the regular season with four games in five nights beginning Wednesday in Albany. The Sens return to the Arena for their final regular season home game Friday versus Canadian Division champion Hamilton at 7:05 p.m. The Sens then visit Albany Saturday (7:05 p.m.) and Providence Sunday afternoon (4:05 p.m.).

Tickets to Friday's game versus Hamilton are now on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets, the Arena box office, the Center Ice Team Shop at Metrocenter, or by calling the Sens Hotline at 722-SENS (7367).
