Syracuse Releases Scooter Smith

Syracuse, NY (April 1, 2003) – The Syracuse Crunch announced today that the Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled defenseman Derrick Walser. Syracuse also announced today that they have released left wing Scooter Smith from his amateur try-out contract.

Walser, 24, has appeared in 28 games with Syracuse this season, recording seven goals, 15 assists and 28 penalty minutes. In 49 games with Columbus Walser recorded four goals, 13 assists and 30 penalty minutes. A native of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Walser was signed as a free agent by Columbus on September 12, 2001.

Smith, 22, appeared in three games with Syracuse, tallying his first professional point (assist) on March 28 against Hamilton. In 39 games with Colgate (ECAC) this season, Smith recorded 24 goals, 27 assists and 42 penalty minutes. A native of Calgary, Alberta, Smith signed an amateur try-out contract with Syracuse on March 26.

The Crunch travel to Philadelphia to play the Phantoms on Wednesday, April 2 at 7 p.m. Crunch action can be heard on SportsRadio 620 WHEN with play-by-play announcer Bob McElligott. Syracuse returns home on Saturday, April 5 to host the Rochester Americans in a 7:30 p.m. match-up. Saturday night is WSEN Team Photo night.
