Vermette named AHL Rookie of the Month
April 1, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that Binghamton Senators center Antoine Vermette has been named the AHL Rookie of the Month for March. In 16 games, Vermette scored 11 goals and added seven assists for 18 points as the Senators moved closer to capturing the East Division championship.
Vermette's month featured six multiple-point efforts and three multiple-goal games, including his first professional hat trick on Mar. 7 in a 3-1 victory over Albany. He scored two goals each on Mar. 2 (vs. Syracuse) and Mar. 14 (vs. Saint John), and wound up with a seven-game scoring streak from Mar. 2-15, netting eight goals and four assists in that span.
A second-round pick by the Ottawa Senators (55th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, Vermette leads all AHL rookies with 34 goals and ranks third with 59 points in 76 games with Binghamton this season. A member of the 2002-03 AHL All-Rookie Team, the 20-year-old Vermette missed most of the 2001-02 campaign with a neck injury, but has bounced back in his first pro season to lead the East Division-leading B-Sens in scoring.
Other nominees for AHL Rookie of the Month for March include Bridgeport left wing Blaine Down, Cincinnati center Tony Martensson, Cleveland center Brad Boyes, Grand Rapids right wing Darryl Bootland, Hamilton right wing Jarret Stoll, Hartford center Layne Ulmer, Lowell right wing Rustyn Dolyny, Manchester center Yanick Lehoux, Manitoba center Nathan Smith, Milwaukee right wing Darren Haydar, Philadelphia center Patrick Sharp, Rochester center Paul Gaustad, Syracuse left wing Mike Pandolfo, Utah goaltender Jason Bacashihua, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton left wing Matt Murley and Worcester center John Pohl.
