Cleveland Barons News Release
CLEVELAND, OH- The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and your Cleveland Barons both entered Tuesday night's activities struggling, but it was the Ducks that were able to snap the bad streak with a 3-2 win.
There were three rookies in the game tonight that finished their amateur careers in Erie of the OHL. Cincinnati's Corey Pecker and the Barons Brad Boyes were the two prolific scorers who attracted the large audience from just east of Cleveland. They would not disappoint and it was Pecker who got the fireworks started with his 15th goal of the year at the 9:31 mark of the first period. Pecker penetrated the scoreboard with the only goal of the period as the Ducks out shot the Barons 11-8 through twenty minutes of action.
In the second period, the Barons killed off a double-minor when Eric LaPlante was sent off for roughing. Neither team had a good scoring opportunity in the first half of the middle stanza. Cleveland's best chance to score came at the fourteen minute mark when rookie Pat Rissmiller got the puck to Niko Dimitrakos but Cincinnati goalie Ilja Bryzgalkov made a spectacular toe save that protected Cincinnati's 1-0 lead. The second period ended with Chad Wiseman missing on a breakaway attempt which would have tied the game.
Pecker was not done for the night as he registered his second of the night to give Cincinnati a 2-0 lead early in the third period. Your Barons fought back with a solid play by newcomer Jamie Ling to cut the lead in half. Jamie Ling, the Barons 62nd player this season, would get the Barons on the board by putting in his own rebound. Then, a Ryan Gillis penalty would be provide end-to-end activity. Brad Boyes scored his 30th of the season on the penalty kill giving the Barons their first shorthanded goal since 12/14 against Worcester and just their fourth all year. The momentum was lost just 38-seconds later when the Ducks finished the power play with the game-winning goal from Brendan Yarema. Harlan Pratt set up the goal for his third assist of the night. With the loss your Barons have now lost 10 (0-9-0-1) consecutive games.
The Barons will hit the road for two games before returning home for the season finale. They will finish the season on Sunday, April 6th against Cincinnati at 4:05pm. Sunday is fan appreciation day and fans will be treated to a variety of giveaways. Bring the kids because Tommy from the Rugrats will be on hand, courtesy of Cox Communication.
