Three TinCaps in Moniker Madness Tourney
August 5, 2011 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Three current and former TinCaps have been selected to compete in Moniker Madness, MiLB.com's annual tourney-style battle for the best name in Minor League Baseball. OF Luis Domoromo, C Jhonaldo Pozo and RHP Kevin Quackenbush are in the running.
Sixty-four of the most unique names in the minors were selected to compete in this year's Moniker Madness tournament. Winners are decided by fan vote at www.minorleaguebaseball.com/madness .
First-round voting continues through Aug. 7 and the tournament concludes on Aug. 25 with the winner announced on Friday, Aug. 26.
Domoromo, 19, has been a fixture in left field for the TinCaps since arriving in Fort Wayne on May 1. He has been followed around the Midwest League by the famous words of Styx, "Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto." While many experts thought of Domoromo as an eight-seed at worst, the selection committee placed him as a feisty 13-seed in the Razor Shines bracket against Mariners INF Forrest Snow.
Quackenbush, 22, joined the TinCaps in late July and has taken over the closer's role. In his first appearance at Parkview Field, fans welcomed him with the "quack, quack, quack" chant of the 90s hit film "The Mighty Ducks." Quackenbush is a three-seed in the Farmer Works Bracket and has a first-round matchup against Orioles farmhand Riley Hornback, a 14-seed.
Pozo, 22, played for the TinCaps for three weeks in late June and early July, batting .235. He may have logged the most travel of any competitor in the entire Moniker Madness tournament, having played at every full-season affiliate of the Padres and Short-A Eugene during this season. Pozo is the fifth seed in the Natty Nattress Bracket, matched up against 12-seed Taiwan Easterling, an outfielder for the Peoria Chiefs.
The TinCaps return to Parkview Field for a seven-game homestand beginning Saturday with a 7:05 p.m. meeting with the Lansing Lugnuts (Class-A Toronto Blue Jays). Tickets are available at TinCaps.com, by phone at (260) 482-6400 and at the Parkview Field ticket office.
