BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Connor Powers slammed two home runs and the pitching staff kept the Bowling Green Hot Rods quiet in a 7-2 victory, Friday at Bowling Green Ballpark.
The TinCaps avoided a four-game series sweep and closed to within three games of Great Lakes for the final Eastern Division playoff spot.
Fort Wayne sprinted out to a 6-0 lead. In the second inning, Powers drew a walk and scored when Tyler Stubblefield followed with a triple to right-center. Mike Gallic singled to center to make it 2-0. The TinCaps proceeded to load the bases but did not come up with more runs.
In the third, Powers smashed a three-run homer to stake Fort Wayne to a 5-0 lead. An inning later, Rymer Liriano drew a two-out walk, stole second and third, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0.
The Hot Rods got on the board in the fourth; Keith Castillo roped an RBI double and scored on Nick Schwaner's single.
Powers hammered a leadoff home run in the fifth to push the TinCaps' lead to 7-2.
The bullpen took it from there as RHP Yefri Carvajal retired all seven batters he faced. RHP Chris Franklin worked a scoreless ninth.
RHP Dennis O'Grady (2-0) received the win thanks to 5.2 strong innings. Bowling Green LHP Braulio Lara (3-9) took the loss, allowing six runs in four innings. The TinCaps evened their record at 20-20 in the half, 50-59 for the season. Bowling Green fell to 21-19 since the all-star break, 62-48 on the year.
The TinCaps return to Parkview Field on Saturday to open a four-game series against the Lansing Lugnuts (Class-A Toronto Blue Jays) at 7:05 p.m. TinCaps RHP Keyvius Sampson (8-2) goes against Lansing RHP Tyler Powell (2-2).
