
Cougars Fall in 12 Innings in Beloit

BELOIT, Wisc. - For the first time this season, the Kane County Cougars lost a game when leading after eight innings. They fell to 40-1 in those situations after losing, 4-3, to the Beloit Snappers in 12 innings on Friday night at Pohlman Field. Despite the tough loss, the Cougars took three out of four in the series and went 4-3 on their seven-game road trip. They lead Clinton for the top playoff spot in the Western Division by three games with 30 remaining.
The Cougars led, 3-2, heading to the bottom of the ninth inning. Chase Boruff retired the first two batters and later had the Snappers down to their final strike when Wang Wei Lin singled to center to score Daniel Santana. The 3-3 score remained until the 12th when Chas Byrne replaced Boruff and got the first two hitters before giving up a single to Lance Ray and a double to Michael Gonzales for the game-ending run. Nelvin Fuentes (3-2) ended up with the win for the Snappers (18-22, 56-45).
Both teams got quality starts and no-decisions from their staff ace.Greg Billo gave up two runs -- one earned -- on three hits over six innings for the Cougars, his sixth quality start in seven outings and the 17th time this year in 22 outings he gave up less than two earned runs. Meanwhile Beloit got 7 2/3 innings of three-run ball from B.J. Hermsen. Angel Franco led the Cougars' offense, cracking a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 2-0 and then launching a solo blast in the eighth to make it 3-2. Franco had hit one homer in 69 games on the season before hitting two on Friday. The Cougars (24-16, 52-57) start a seven-game home stand Saturday night at 6 CT when they commence a four-game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (16-24, 54-56). Yordano Ventura (2-3, 5.02) will face Maverick Lasker (1-4, 6.68).
