West Michigan wins over Dragons

Dayton, Ohio-Steven Moya and Curt Casali hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning and the West Michigan Whitecaps held on for a 3-2 win over the Dayton Dragons on Friday night. The two clubs split the four-game series as the Dragons saw their second half record fall to 25-15.

The home runs by Moya and Casali against Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Corcino (9-6) gave West Michigan a 2-0 lead.

The Dragons started their scoring in the third on three consecutive two-out singles by Ronald Torreyes, David Vidal, and Donald Lutz to make it 2-1. But West Michigan added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Josh Ashenbrenner to again lead by two runs at 3-1.

The Dragons scored in the sixth on a one-out walk to Lutz, a wild pitch, and a two-out run-scoring single by Tucker Barnhart to make it 3-2.

The Dragons had a chance to tie for win in the bottom of the ninth. Barnhart led off with a single to right, his third hit of the game. With one out, Theo Bowe singled to left and Barnhart went to second. After Jefry Sierra struck out, Billy Hamilton reached on an error to load the bases. But Torreyes struck out looking on a 2-2 pitch to end the game.

Corcino suffered the loss. He worked six innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs with one walk and seven strikeouts.

The Dragons collected nine hits. Barnhart was 3 for 4 with an RBI and Vidal was 2 for 4.

The Dragons begin a seven-game road trip on Saturday in Eastlake, Ohio against the Lake County Captains at 7:00 p.m. (WONE 980 AM). Josh Smith (9-6, 3.10) will start for Dayton. The next home game is Saturday, August 13 vs. Lake County at Fifth Third Field.
