New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - In conjunction with the Eastern League, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats announced that three members of this year's team have been named to the Eastern Division's squad for the 2015 Eastern League All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 15, in Portland, Maine. Relief pitcher Danny Barnes will join infielder Jorge Flores and outfielder Dwight Smith, Jr. for this year's mid-summer classic.
Flores has been perhaps the most consistent performer for the Fisher Cats this season. Over 65 games, he is hitting an even .300 with 15 doubles. The infielder has tallied 64 hits and scored 23 runs while batting in six different slots in the line-up. He has also played five defensive positions - shortstop, second base, third base, left field and right field - but has spent the majority of his time in the middle of the infield. A 19th round pick by the Blue Jays in 2012, Flores will play in his first mid-season All-Star game in his first full season in Double-A. He was a post-season All-Star after his pro debut in 2012 with Vancouver.
Smith, Jr., is playing in his first season with New Hampshire, and will appear in his second straight All-Star Game. A first-round pick by the Blue Jays in 2011, Smith, Jr. leads the team with 71 hits and 46 runs scored, the latter the second-most in the league. Over 68 games, he is hitting .268 with 15 doubles, two triples, and three home runs in his first Double-A campaign. Like Flores, he has displayed positional versatility, appearing in games in all three outfield positions. He was an All-Star last year with Advanced A Dunedin in the Florida State League.
Barnes is enjoying a strong campaign in his first full year with the Fisher Cats. The Princeton product has compiled two wins, two losses, and two saves over his first 23 games of the year. Over 33.1 innings, he's put together a 2.43 ERA while striking out 42 batters. His high strikeout total has him ranked fifth among Eastern League relievers with 11.34 strikeouts per nine innings. Fully healthy for the first time in recent years, this is Barnes' first All-Star appearance since he was a mid-season, post-season, and organizational All-Star with Dunedin in 2012.
The Fisher Cats representation will head to Portland on Tuesday, July 14 before partaking in the All-Star festivities the following day. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. from Portland's Hadlock Field on July 15.
Currently on a seven-game road trip, the Fisher Cats return to Northeast Delta Dental Stadium for the 4th of July holiday weekend. A new homestand begins with an Atlas Fireworks 4th of July Extravaganza on Saturday night. There will be four total fireworks shows during the homestand, plus a Jack Murphy poster giveaway and an Old Man of the Mountain bobblehead giveaway on Tuesday night.
