Reading Fightin Phils News Release
The Fightin Phils (42-36) hold the New Britain Rock Cats (41-37) to just one run for the second straight night as they won 3-1. Andrew Knapp's two-run single in the top of the first inning would be enough to win it for Reading.
The Fightin Phils wasted no-time as they took a 2-0 lead off Bryan Evans (4-3) and the Rock Cats in the top of the first inning. Knapp hit a two-run single to score Kelly Dugan and Brock Stassi. Eight batters came to the plate in the inning. Evans retired the first two batters in the inning.
New Britain got a run off Ben Lively in the bottom of the third inning as Pat Valaika hit a RBI single with two outs to score Jayson Langfels and cut the lead to 2-1 for Reading. Brock Stassi recorded his 52nd RBI of the season with a single in the top of the fifth inning off Evans to give the Fightins a 3-1 lead.
Ben Lively was ejected in the bottom of the sixth inning by home plate umpire Paul Clemons. He left the game with two runners on and Ryan O'Sullivan entered the game. He struck out Jeremy Barfield and got Juan Ciriaco to ground into an inning-ending double-play.
Lively (6-6) allowed just one run off six hits in five innings with two walks and two strikeouts in earning his sixth win of the season. Ryan O'Sullivan tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Lively. Reinier Roibal pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning. Stephen Shackleford earned his 16th save as he retired the side in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Kelly Dugan extended his hitting streak to six games with his second three-hit game of the series. Brodie Greene extended his hitting streak to five games with a single in the top of the fourth inning.
