Kalamazoo Wings News Release
?KALAMAZOO, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings allowed a season-high 53 shots on net in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Toledo Walleye on Sunday at Wings Event Center during the annual teddy bear toss game, presented by MedExpress Urgent Care.
The first period ended with both teams generating several chances, but neither could find the back of the net.
Kalamazoo scored the first goal of the contest seventeen seconds into the second period. Alex Mallet's wrap-around chance was stopped by the pad of Jeff Lerg, but David Gilbert deposited the loose puck for his second of the season, prompting 1,087 teddy bears and stuffed animals to be tossed onto the ice, all of which will be donated to the Bronson Children's Hospital.
Colin Murray pushed the lead to 2-0 midway through the second frame. Cory Pritz unleased a one-timer from the blue line, which deflected off the body of Murray and past Lerg. The goal was Murray's second of the season.
Tanner Sorenson scored his fourth of the season just over ten minutes later to give Kalamazoo a 3-0 lead. A scrum in front of Lerg led to the puck bouncing around the crease before Sorenson pushed it in to the corner of the net. With the goal, Sorenson has earned a point in three straight games.
Answering just 26-seconds later, the Walleye cut their deficit to 3-1. Joel Chouinard took the faceoff, streaked into the zone and lifted a wrist shot over the blocker of Joel Martin.
Bringing the Walleye to within one, Marek Tvrdon split the Wings' defensemen and pushed a shot on goal that squeaked through the pads of Martin.
Later in the third, the Walleye netted their third unanswered goal of the contest to even the game. Taking a faceoff win in the offensive zone, Richard Nedomlel lifted an innocent wrister towards the net, but Michael Leone tipped the puck down and through the pads of Martin.
Moving into the three-on-three overtime, both teams found quality scoring chances, but the game would remain scoreless and head to a shootout. A.J. Jenks was the lone scorer in the shootout to give the Walleye the 4-3 win.
Notes: Kalamazoo has lost four straight games. With a goal in the second period, Tanner Sorenson is on a three-game point streak. Gilbert had his second multi-point game of the year. Kalamazoo allowed a season-high 53 shots on net. A.J. Jenks was the lone scorer in the shootout. Kalamazoo will play their next four away from Wings Event Center.
